Hi! from Tania

Hi there,

Just as the lovely weather has come in, everyone in our household picked up and passed on a gastro bug! Arghh! I picked it up early in the month, just as I was set to host a function for 24. Then poor Jake went down on the second day of rehearsals for his first ever play The Princess and the Pea, but in the true spirit of the theatre, recovered well to appear in the show. Unfortunately, by then, his sister Holly had picked up the bug and vomited AT the show - five times, on my lap. The show was being recorded, so sitting in the second row, we have this whole event available to replay anytime. I must say, the cameraman worked around our drama well. Then, just as Holly started to recover, Rick went down.

Who would have thought, but that The Princess and the Pea DVD has been a godsend. Holly's just come out of hospital after having her tonsils out and has watched it up to a dozen times a day. She loves all the singing and dancing and has picked up most of it now. Could we have two budding actors on our hands?

Warm wishes,

Tania

Feature: 10 Thoughts to Build Connection with Your Partner

When we feel angry, stressed or distant from our partners we often focus on their negative characteristics. This leads to distress-maintaining thoughts, which in turn leaves us feeling more distant and isolated from our partners.

The following exercise from The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman and Nan Silver is designed to  get us back into the habit of thinking positively about our partners and rebuilding a sense of connection.

For maximum impact read the thought and then do the suggested task five days a week for the next two weeks and capture your work in a journal or notebook.

  1. Thought 1: I am genuinely fond of my partner. Task: List one characteristic you find endearing or lovable about your partner.
  2. Thought 2: I am physically attracted to my partner. Task: Think of one physical attribute you like about your partner.
  3. Thought 3: My partner has specific qualities that make me proud. Task: Write down one characteristic that makes you proud of your partner.
  4. Thought 4: We have the same general beliefs and values. Task: Describe one belief you share.
  5. Thought 5: We have common goals.Task: List one such goal.
  6. Thought 6: My home is a place to come to get support and reduce stress. Task: List a time when your partner helped you reduce stress.
  7. Thought 7: I can easily recall the time we first met. Task: Describe that first meeting on paper.
  8. Thought 8: We divide up household chores in a fair way. Task: Describe one way you do this on a regular basis.
  9. Thought 9: We are able to plan well and have a sense of control over our lives together. Task: Describe one thing you both planned together.
  10. Thought 10: I think we can weather any storm together. Task: Reminisce about having made it  through a hard time.

As you work through this exercise you're likely to find your perspective on your partner and your relationship becoming far sunnier. What you're doing is rehearsing a more positive way to think about your partner and your relationship. Like any rehearsal, if you do it often enough, the words (and, more importantly, the thoughts) will become second nature.

You Are Not Your Brain: Virtual Masterclass Series

I'll be participating in this masterclass - would you like to join me?

Develop new techniques for taking control of your brain, changing bad habits and ending unhealthy thinking in this 5-week masterclass with two world-leading authorities in coaching and neuroscience.

Do you ever feel as if you:

  • overthink problems or worry about things that are out of your control?
  • place unrealistically high expectations on yourself?
  • get stuck or panicked because of fear and worries?
  • blame and beat up on yourself?
  • engage in unhealthy behaviours to escape life's daily stresses?
  • act against your overall best interest?

You most likely answered 'yes' to one or more of these. We all do periodically. One thing is clear: when we do experience these things, we don't like it and we wish we could change it.

The great news is - you can!

In the You are not your brain: virtual masterclass series you will learn Dr Schwartz's revolutionary 4-step solution and develop new mindfulness techniques for taking control of your brain. Say goodbye to the negative self-talk and deceptive brain messages and hello to increased productivity, confidence, performance and happiness!

In this program you'll explore each of the four steps in depth:

1. Relabel: Learn how to identify deceptive brain messages (unhealthy thoughts) as they happen.

2. Reframe: Learn how to change your perception on the importance of these thoughts (it's not ME, it's my BRAIN!).

3. Refocus: Learn techniques for shifting your attention to something that is positive, healthy and beneficial to you.

4. Revalue: Learn the importance of truly understanding and believing that deceptive brain messages are not real, and have little or no value to you in your life.

These four steps were developed by Dr Schwartz initially in his work with OCD patients and have since been adopted by millions of health practitioners in their work and people in their lives through Dr Schwartz's best selling books You Are Not Your Brain and Brain Lock.

This is a unique opportunity to spend a month learning from and having exclusive access to two of the world's leading authorities in neuroscience and coaching. Connect with like-minded people in your class and learn from one another to enhance the impact the program has on your everyday life! Bring the theory of the book to life and learn practical, new techniques for maximising your productivity and performance every day.

Starts Tuesday 13 November at:

9.30 am Western Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong

11.30 am Queensland

12.00 pm South Australia

12.30 pm NSW, ACT and Victoria

2.30 pm New Zealand
